The Writings on the Wall

Dossier / The Writings on the Wall is an editorial project developed in collaboration by VOLUME and Beta – Timisoara Architecture Biennial 2022. It features a selection of 10 texts that inspired the topic of Another Breach in the Wall, the main exhibition of Beta 2022, curated by Daniel Tudor Munteanu & Davide Tommaso Ferrando.
Another Breach in the Wall is dedicated to loopholes – projects and actions that are capable of generating exceptional urban pockets by questioning the laws, rules, and codes that produce the space we inhabit.
The selection of texts forms a free compendium of practices that inquire and experiment with the liminal space between legality, alegality and illegality.
The texts are organised into 5 groups of 2 contributions each, depending on their content and focus. For the duration of Beta 2022 (23.9 – 23.10) the five pairs will be published online the website of Volume, each Friday and Sunday.

The last contribution of The Writings on the Wall is an edited version of the editorial of ARCH+: The Property Issue, curated by Arno Brandlhuber and Olaf Grawert. The text reflects on the political agency that architects can have today: starting from the often neglected questions, “Who owns the land? Who regulates it?” the authors propose a shift from “architecture” to “architecting” as an action outside the construction of buildings, thus capable of addressing a broader set of concerns.
