A clear distinction once existed between the battlefield and the civic realm. That distinction seems to have disappeared: war has become part of public space. This fact becomes exceptionally transparent in the context of peacekeeping missions and the reconstruction of regions struck by war.
This Thursday the seminar Missions & Missionaries in Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam will examine the meaning of missions for architecture and planning, our physical surroundings, and the organisation of public and civic space.
